Crater Lake is one of several "Wonders of the West". It is a magnificent lake in the center of what is known as Mount Mazama, a 12,000 foot high volcano that blew its top about 7700 years ago. The calderas now forms a perfect blue lake with two small islands. The larger, Wizard Island, still is an active volcano in its own right.

We drove around part of the rim to the north side where we hiked down to the water front. The path is steep with many switch backs, but the scenery is fantastic. At the bottom we boarded a boat for a cruise around the lake. It wasn't cold, just a bit wet from the spray.

The view from below is totally different than from the rim. The jagged peaks of the volcanic formations, for example, show up much more dramatically and it was interesting to get a close up view of the tiny island called Ghost Ship.
