Turtles at the Beach

We all went north, past Hanalei to the end of the road, and spent a day at Ke' e Beach. Beyond here is the almost inaccessible Napili coast with sheer cliffs that drop into the ocean.

We found a spot with a bit of shade and spread out all the stuff needed when you have five kids along. Then it was swimming, snorkeling and playing in the sand. Notice in the pictures below that the waves were breaking at the edge of the corral reef. Beyond there the bottom drops off quickly.

Jay had gone snorkeling beyond the breakers and came back telling everyone about the turtles he had seen out there. Of course, we all had to go look and touch these docile creatures. Some of them were as much as three feet long.

Docile, may be, but not totally harmless, as one of us found out. While snorkeling amongst several of these great animals and feeding one turtle some seaweed, another one bit him in the back. Was it a jealous boyfriend?
