Ponza is a volcanic spire rising out of the Mediterranean sea almost due west of Naples. It is an old fishing port from way back when. The folks from Rome and Naples re-discovered it, built nice summer homes and enjoyed the tranquil setting. Then came the Wind Surf.

The island is about seven kilometers long (4 miles), has one road to the west end and essentially one town by the same name.

The port is small and we had to anchor offshore. The lighthouse, small boats in harbor and the brightly colored houses were a major contrast to what we saw along the Riviera.

We walked around town, bought a print, and then hiked up some steep trails to have a better view of the surroundings.

It was decided that Ponza was a refreshing stop after all the hoopla at the Riviera. We wished we could have stayed longer to explore the caves along the rocky shore. Anyone interested in more information and pictures should visit: http://www.ponza.com/eng/index.htm
