Just after our ship pulled into the harbor of Rhodes we had a
light breakfast on deck. Then we walked over to the fortified "Old
Town", entered through one of the gates and found ourselves amongst little
alleys and tons of souvenir shops. |

The Grand
Masters Palace was built during the crusades by the
Knights of St. John. It must have had a major restoration since then because the place
looked quite new. The thick walls, on one side, are part of the city's defensive
perimeter and it is possible to climb on top. |

Inside
the courtyard is where Jay had to show-off his form of "statue-ism". |

Along the inland side
of the town is a deep, dry moat. To cross it, the
invaders had to drop down a steep wall and then try to climb an even higher wall
on the other side. The large, round boulders shown below were probably thrown by
large catapults to breach the thick walls. Roger and I, being new pirates, found several hidden passages and had fun exploring. Years later I built a model of a "trebuchet", a catapult that may have been used here. |

Then it was time to go back to the ship and indulge. Notice
that Jay wasn't loosing any weight. |
