California Coast

We have great neighbors and we have knows each other for almost forty years. From time to time we have taken some excursions with them such as this overnight stay at Safari West. Before we arrived at this remote spot north of Santa Rosa, we stopped for lunch at the Vintner's Inn.  (click here to see some more pictures of another visit)

Besides the numerous wild animals that roam in many acres of rolling hills, Safari West has some unique lodging.  Scattered between the trees and next to a large pond are various tents that are of the same design as those found in Africa. Inside each tent is a king size bed, a tiled bathroom and other amenities. The deck is where we gathered for some drinks and nibbles before our barbeque dinner in the main lodge.

One of the first things you will notice when you arrive at Safari West are the giraffes. Although behind a tall fence, these gentle animals may be fed some pieces of squash and leaves. That gave Jay the idea of his "kiss". In addition to long necks, giraffes have an extremely long tongue, as Jay quickly found out.

The following morning, after some breakfast, we hopped onto this old army truck for a tour of the "jungle" and a close up look at some of the animals. Besides a driver, we had our own naturalist, Dr. Horatio Giggleston.

Keep in mind this is really more of a zoo than an open wilderness. But overall it is a very interesting place to visit and we had fun staying there at night and listen to the animals close by.
