Yosemite

Springtime High Country

I remember it well. It was February  . . . . or was it August?

Susan, who was a student at UC Santa Barbara at the time, and I wanted to go back packing. We had done many trips with Sandra and friends when they were in their pre-teens. But this was to be just the two of us. We had never been in the northern parts of Yosemite and wanted to see Matterhorn Peak close up. We started with nice sunny weather at Twin Lakes, headed up to Snow Lake when it happened!

About three in the afternoon dark clouds turned grey, then let loose with snow and more snow. We had just set up our little tent while Susan, who doesn't like my snoring, strung up a rope for her tube-tent. We had a cold meal that night and hunkered down.

Susan quickly gave up on her tube tent, joined me, and we actually slept pretty well that night. The following morning we had a surprise view of Snow Lake and our surroundings. There was about five inches of new snow on the ground.

Sleeping in the tube-tent would have been a disaster. Continuing on our planned hike was also out of the question because we couldn't see the trail anymore. So we packed up and headed back, laughing all the way about this crazy experience.
